Hope this blog thing is working!

Just logging in and it appears all may not be well on this site. Hopefully I can get the problem fixed soon.

Just wanted to repeat information about how to visit the 50-50 Show in person. The fundraiser preview is Thursday, July 29, 7 to 9 pm. Tickets are available for $10.98 at, 1-800-838-3006, or $20 at the door. The Friday night opening July 30, 6 to 10 pm, is free to the public. About a thousand people came to the opening last year, so if you prefer a more peaceful atmosphere, I suggest coming to the ticketed preview. Location is Sanchez Art Center, 1220 Linda Mar Blvd., Pacifica, CA 94044. Directions are on the website,

Taking a different tack . . .

Too much of the pastel sweetness and light all at once just before this, I guess. Time to get a bit more austere.

I've also found myself using ideas from earlier quite larger works, and translating them down to this small size. Interesting exercise. (Have I just been wasting canvas all this time??) I generally paint on medium large canvases, like 24 x 30 to 36 x 36 or even larger. I wonder how this "scaling down" aspect will affect my work when I go back to bigger canvases?

What I do is make many small sketches of ideas. It's an easy thing to do anytime I'm waiting somewhere. Then I turn many of those sketches into 50-50 pieces. Not all, of course, but many of them. This means that I have to be careful to check off or "X" out the sketches I have actually used, so as not to repeat an image. So far that's only happened once, and as you can see above, I've changed the green & purple one by collaging on a small felt marker on paper drawing.

50-50 Musings

It's interesting to me that as I paint these 6-inch panels, small sets start to emerge, like a two-fer, or a trio of pieces that go together. This was not planned, it just happened. I like it! Of course, sometimes this happens because I have a good color mixed up and I want to use up the paint. It's all grist for the mill here.

More 50-50 works

July 16, 2010 (still)

Maybe the images will upload this time!

50-50 Show, continued

July 16, 2010
I've photographed about half of my 50-50 works so far, and hope to post them all here tonight. Then I can photograph the rest of the pieces tomorrow and try to get them up as well. It's kind of like doing some of everything at once, since I'm not quite done with painting, either, having been away for a week. So I'm painting, learning how to use my new camera, photographing pieces, posting on this blog, and trying to figure out how to make the blog look reasonably good. So please bear with me!

The 50-50 Show at Sanchez Art Center

I'm participating in the 50-50 Show II, July 30-August 29, 2010, at Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA. Each artist creates 50 artworks in 50 days. Granted, each piece is only 6 inches square, but still . . . fifty!

My medium is acrylic on MDF panels, and my theme is Abstract (shapes and colors). I've always loved geometric shapes and the play of color fields, so I decided to focus in this area and see where I ended up. Halfway through, I've experienced elation, boredom, worry, frustration, and great pleasure and a sense of completion when a piece comes out as I wanted it to. Plus pure joy at painting so much of the time.

The large image shows the first 50-50 piece I did, on May 17. (This piece is now sold, but will, of course, be in the exhibition.) Blogging is new to me, so I will post more pieces as I learn how to do this.
